SKF Ball Bearings

Deep groove ball bearings

Deep groove ball bearings are the most widely used bearing type and are extremely versatile. They are low-friction, optimized for low vibration and low noise, which enables particularly high rotation speeds. SKF deep groove ball bearings withstand both axial and radial  loads, are easy to install and require less maintenance than other types of bearings.

SKF's bearing catalog lists a wide range of versions and designs and sizes of deep groove ball bearings.

Subtypes:
  • Single row deep groove ball bearings
  • Single row deep groove ball bearings with filling slots
  • Double row deep groove ball bearings
  • Stainless steel deep groove ball bearings

Insert bearings (Y-bearings)

The insert bearings or by other name SKF Y-bearings are based on the sealed deep groove ball bearings of the 62 and 63 series. But with a convex outer ring and, in most cases, an extended inner ring! The special locking mechanism enables easy and quick   installation on the shaft.

The different insert Y bearing series differ in the way the bearing is attached to the shaft:

- with fixing screws
- with eccentric closing collar

- with adapter sleeve
- with interference fit
- with SKF ConCentra locking technology.

The SKF insert bearing range also includes application-specific versions such as:

- bearings made of stainless steel or with galvanized rings for the food industry (Existing bearings with fixing screws, SKF Food Line ball bearing units)

- bearings for agricultural applications (SKF ball bearing units for agricultural applications)

Angular contact ball bearings

SKF angular contact ball bearings have outer and inner  raceways that are offset relative to each other in the direction of the bearing axis. What does it mean? This means that these bearings are designed to accommodate combined loads, namely simultaneous radial and axial loads.

The axial load capacity of angular contact ball bearings increases like the contact angle increases. The contact angle is the angle between the line connecting the contact points of the raceways and  ball in the radial plane and the line perpendicular to the axis of the bearing along which the combined load is transferred from one raceway to the other. This special construction is a bearing recommended primarily for industrial and agricultural use under higher loads.

Subtypes:

  • Single row angular contact ball bearings

  • Double row angular contact ball bearings

  • Four-point contact ball bearings

Self-aligning ball bearings

SKF Self-aligning ball bearings have two rows of balls, a common spherical raceway in the outer ring and two deep, uninterrupted raceway grooves in the inner ring. They are available in open or closed design. The bearings are insensitive to the angular deviation of the shaft relative to the housing, which is caused, for example, by the deflection of the shaft.

Versions of SKF self-aligning ball bearings:

1. open - with cylindrical bore, conical bore or extended inner ring

2. closed - with a cylindrical bore or conical bore, e.g. for use with adapter sleeves

Thrust ball bearings

SKF thrust ball bearings are manufactured as one-way or two-way thrust ball bearings. These type of bearing is only suitable for axial loads and can't be subjected to any radial loads. Below are the different thrust bearing variants:

1. Single direction thrust ball bearings:

  • consists of a shaft washer, a housing washer, and a ball and cage assembly
  • able to withstand axial loads and to place the shaft axially in one direction only

2. Double direction thrust ball bearings:

  • consists of a shaft washer, two housing washers, and two ball and basket assemblies
  • The housing washers and ball and cage assemblies of two-way bearings are the same as those used in one-way bearings.
  • able to withstand axial load and to position the shaft axially, in both directions

3. Bearings with sphered housing washers:

  • can handle the initial shift
  • they are available in one-way and two-way versions
  • can be used together with a spherical seat washer next to the housing washer or next to a machine part manufactured with a spherical surface
  • Depending on the bearing series, they have the basic designation U2, U3 or U4, followed by a two-digit number that indicates the size. For example: U 320 ball brake washer for bearing 53320.
.

Angular contact thrust ball bearings

SKF angular contact thrust ball bearings are separable to the washers and the ball and cage assemblies can be installed independently. For all that, originally designed to support rotary tables on drilling rigs, it's now used for many other applications. SKF offers two main types:

1. Single direction angular contact thrust ball bearings:

One-way angular contact thrust ball bearings are designed to accept axial loads in one direction only, so they are matched with a second bearing or installed as a kit. In the main field of application of rotary tables, two bearings are always used and adjusted to each other.

2. Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings:

Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings consist of a housing washer, two shaft washers and two different sized ball and cage assemblies. The larger bearing half has a higher load-bearing capacity. SKF double direction angular contact ball bearings are low profile and can carry loads in both directions. Therefore, a single bearing can be used to support rotating machine components compared to stationary components

.

SKF Roller Bearings

Cylindrical roller bearings

SKF cylindrical roller bearings are available in many designs, series, versions and a lot of sizes. The main design differences are the number of roller rows and the inner or outer ring flanges, as well as the design and material of the cage.

The bearings meet the challenges of applications with high radial loads and high speeds. Also using axial displacement, they provide high stiffness, extra long service life and  low friction.

Cylindrical roller bearings are available in split or  sealed designs. In sealed bearings, the rollers are protected from water, dirt, dust while ensuring the retention of lubricant and the exclusion of contaminants. This ensures less friction and longer service life for SKF bearings. Split bearings are primarily intended for hard-to-access bearing arrangements. Such as crankshafts, where they simplify maintenance and replacement, reducing costs.

Types:

  • Single row cylindrical roller bearings
  • High-capacity cylindrical roller bearings
  • Double row cylindrical roller bearings
  • Four-row cylindrical roller bearings
  • Single row full complement cylindrical roller bearings
  • Double row full complement cylindrical roller bearings
  • SKF Cooper split cylindrical roller bearings

Needle roller bearings

SKF needle roller bearings are cylindrical roller bearings with a small diameter compared to their length. The modified roller or raceway profile prevents stress peaks and ergo extends bearing life.

SKF supplies needle roller bearings in many designs, series and a wide range of sizes. Which makes them suitable for a broad variety of operating conditions and applications.

Main SKF needle roller bearing types:

  • Needle roller and cage assemblies - self-contained, ready-to-mount bearings
  • Drawn cup needle roller bearings
  • Needle roller bearings with machined rings
  • Alignment needle roller bearings
  • Combined needle roller bearings - radial needle roller bearing combined with a thrust bearing
  • Universal joint bearings

Tapered roller bearings

With a wide range of designs to choose from, SKF tapered roller bearings can be customized to meet your specific speed, load, contamination, vibration,  temperature  conditions.

SKF tapered roller bearings have a cup and cone assembly. The cup consists of the outer ring and the cone assembly consists of the inner ring, rollers and cage. This bearing design adapts to combined loads and provides extremely low friction during operation. Through adjusting one single row tapered roller bearing against a second tapered roller bearing and applying a preload, a rigid bearing application can be achieved.

SKF tapered roller bearings are also manufactured in the Explorer class. SKF Explorer combines our expertise in bearing design, tribology, metallurgy, lubrication and manufacturing. SKF Explorer tapered roller bearings are typically used in bearing solutions that require increased performance, reduced friction or increased power density.

Types:

  • Single row tapered roller bearings
  • Matched tapered roller bearings
  • Double row tapered roller bearings
  • Four-row tapered roller bearings
  • SKF Cooper split tapered roller bearings

Spherical roller bearings

High axial and radial  loads in applications prone to displacement or shaft deflection?

Meet the challenge with SKF's spherical roller bearings, which achieve low maintenance costs and long bearing life.  Thanks to their high load capacity and ability to eliminate misalignment.

SKF invented this type of bearing in 1919 and today it has the widest range on the bearing market - open and closed as well. There are spherical roller bearings designed for a wide range of applications, including wind turbine crankshafts, continuous rollers, vibration applications and high speed applications, over and above solid oil bearings, split bearings, SKF ConCentra roller bearings and pieces for the roughest applications.

- Bearings with Solid Oil

- NoWear coated bearings

- Split spherical roller bearings

- Three-barrier solution

CARB toroidal roller bearings

SKF CARB toroidal roller bearings are unique! As well as accommodating misalignment without increased stress levels, they also provide frictionless axial movement within the bearing in the non-locating position in self-aligning bearing arrangements. They can accommodate higher load levels and provide significantly extended service life. Owing to its special production technology, it ensures outstanding durability.

Cylindrical roller thrust bearings

SKF cylindrical roller thrust bearings are designed to accommodate heavy axial loads and impact loads. They mustn't subjected to any radial load. The bearings are very stiff and require little axial space.

  • Separable design
Shaft washer, housing washer, cylindrical roller and cage thrust assembly can be mounted separately.
  • Extended bearing service life
To prevent stress peaks, the roller ends are relieved slightly to modify the line contact between the rollers and raceways.

Needle roller thrust bearings

SKF needle roller thrust bearings are fitted with a formstable cage to reliably retain and guide a large number of needle rollers. Needle roller thrust bearings provide a high degree of stiffness within a minimum axial space. In applications where the faces of adjacent machine components can serve as raceways, needle roller thrust bearings take up no more space than a conventional thrust washer.

  • Accommodate heavy axial loads and peak loads
The teeny diameter deviation of the rollers within one assembly enables these bearings to accommodate heavy axial loads and peak loads.
  • Extended bearing service life
To prevent stress peaks, the roller ends are relieved slightly to modify the line contact between the rollers and raceways.

Tapered roller thrust bearings

SKF tapered roller thrust bearings are designed to accommodate heavy axial loads and peak loads. The bearings are infelxiable and require little axial space.

  • Separable design
The shaft and housing washers and the roller and cage thrust assemblies of tapered roller thrust bearings with cages can be mounted separately.
  • Low friction
The optimized roller end design and surface finish on the flange promote lubricant film formation, resulting in lower friction. This also reduces frictional heat and flange wear.
  • Long service life
Depending on the design, crowned or logarithmic raceway profiles optimize the load distribution along the contact surfaces, reduce stress peaks at the roller ends, and reduce the sensitivity to misalignment compared with conventional straight raceway profiles.
  • Enhanced operational reliability
The surface finish on the contact surfaces on the rollers and raceways supports the formation of a hydrodynamic lubricant film.
  • High load carrying capacity
The rollers incorporated in SKF tapered roller thrust bearings are manufactured to such close dimensional and geometrical tolerances that they are practically identical. It is provides optimal load distribution and enables the bearings to accommodate heavy axial loads.

SKF Engineered products

Backing bearings

SKF backing bearings are also available in many designs and variants. The principal assortment is based on double or three-row cylindrical roller bearings. Single row needle roller bearing and double row tapered roller bearing designs are also available.

Backing bearings have been specially developed for cold rolling mills of the cluster type. But can also be used for other applications, for example straightening or bending machines. These bearings have a particularly thick-walled outer ring and can be mounted on stationary support shafts to form backup or straightening rolls.

  • High load carrying capacity
  • Low friction
The optimized internal geometry reduces friction and heat generated by the bearing.
  • Long service life
The logarithmic roller profile reduces edge stresses at the roller, raceway contact under all load conditions. Also, the logarithmic outer ring outside diameter profile reduces edge loading during operation and contributes to extended service life.
  • Enhanced operational reliability
The surface finish on the contact surfaces of the rollers and raceways supports the formation of a hydrodynamic lubricant film.
  • Effective lubrication
The most SKF backing bearings have lubrication holes and many have one or more annular grooves in the inner ring to enable lubrication through the support shaft.

Sensor bearing units

SKF sensor bearing units are used to monitor accurately the status of rotating or linear components and are compact, robust and reliable, simple and ready-to-mount.

INSOCOAT bearings

Electric motors, generators and associated equipment are endangered when an electric current passes through their bearings. This can damage the contact surfaces of rolling elements and raceways in the bearings , so called electrical erosion and rapidly degrade the grease. An additional risk in electric motors and generators comes from high frequency currents caused by the inherent stray capacitance. The risk of damage increases where the application uses a frequency converter.

INSOCOAT bearings are designed to prevent electric current from passing through the bearing. The external surfaces of either their inner or outer ring are coated with an insulating aluminium oxide layer, by applying a sophisticated plasma-spray process for an outstanding quality finish. The solutions are very cost effective compared with other insulation methods.

High temperature bearings and bearing units

SKF high temperature bearings and bearing units are designed to deliver increased reliability, reduced complexity and decreased environmental impact in operating temperatures up to 350 °C (660 °F), making these products very suitable for applications in kiln trucks, roller hearth furnaces, and bakeries. Because SKF high temperature bearings correspond to the ISO dimensions of grease-lubricated bearings, production efficiencies and cost savings can be realized with a simple change to the SKF bearing solution.

The SKF standard assortment of high temperature bearings and bearing units corresponding to ISO standards includes:

  • Deep groove ball bearings
  • Insert bearings
  • Ball bearing units

These bearings are customized for use in applications such as:

  • Automatic wafer baking ovens in the food and beverage industry
  • Industrial furnaces
  • Chains

NoWear coated bearings

NoWear is a wear-resistant carbon coating that can be applied to the rolling elements and inner ring raceway(s) of a bearing (designation suffix L7DA) or only the rolling elements (designation suffix L5DA).

A physical vapour deposition process applies the wear-resistant carbon coating. Thickness of the coating ranges from 1 to 3 μm, depending on the size of the bearing. The hardness of the coating is 1 200 HV10.

NoWear coated bearing surfaces retain the toughness of the underlying material while adopting the hardness, improved friction properties and wear-resistance of the coating.

During the running-in period, minute amounts of the coating material are transferred to the counter-surfaces. This coating reduces friction and improves resistance against wear and smearing, even in bearings where only the rolling elements are coated.

Bearings with Solid Oil

SKF bearings with Solid Oil are designed for use in applications where high levels of moisture and incidental contact with water and other contaminants are real issues. Bearings with Solid Oil are lubricated for the life of the bearing and cannot be relubricated.

Solid Oil:

  • is an oil saturated, polymer material moulded into the bearing, forming very narrow gaps between the rolling elements, raceways and cage(s), enabling the bearing to rotate freely
  • having a porous structure, with millions of micro-pores that retain the lubricating oil by surface tension
  • virtually fills all of the free space in the bearing
  • releases oil into the narrow gaps, during operation, providing effective minimum quantity lubrication

Indexing roller units

SKF indexing roller units are based on double or four-row full complement cylindrical roller bearings.

They have been developed for continuous furnaces of sintering and pelletizing plants. These ready-to-mount units are also suitable for heavy load applications where the direction of rotation is frequently reversed, or where rotational speeds are low.

  • High load carrying capacity
The thick-walled outer ring enables high radial loads to be accommodated, while reducing distortion and bending stresses. Because of their inner ring flanges, indexing roller units can also accommodate heavy axial loads.
The maximum number of rollers in double and four-row cylindrical roller bearings without a cage incorporated, contribute to the high load carrying capacity.
  • Low friction
The surface finish on the contact surfaces of the rollers and raceways as well as the optimized internal geometry of these roller units keeps friction at start-up and in operation at a very low level.
  • Long service life
The logarithmic roller profile reduces edge stresses at the roller/raceway contact.

MRC single-row radial deep groove bearings can carry significant radial loads, because of the uninterrupted raceway grooves and the high degree of conformity between balls and raceways. It can carry substantial thrust loads in either direction, even at very high speeds.

A range of arrangements

MRC single-row radial deep groove bearings are available open, with single or double shields/seals, and snap rings in various combinations.

Single-row maximum capacity, filling notch, Type M

Designed for heavy or predominantly radial loads

MRC's single-row Maximum "M-type" bearings have a single filling slot in both, the inner and outer ring, enabling more balls to be added. Because of the increased ball compliment, filling slot bearings have a higher radial load carrying capacity than bearings without filling slots.

They can be used in applications with heavy radial loads or a combination of radial and thrust loads, where the radial load is predominant. They are not recommended for use where only thrust loads are present.

A range of arrangements

MRC single-row radial deep groove bearings are available open with single or double shields/seals, and snap rings in various combinations.

Self-aligning ball bearings

Designed to handle misalignment

MRC self-aligning bearings have two rows of balls with a common sphered raceway in the outer ring. This gives the bearings their self-aligning property, permiting angular misalignment of the shaft relative to the housing.

They are therefore particularly suitable for applications where misalignment can arise from errors in mounting or from shaft deflection. MRC non-sealed self-aligning ball bearings have the lowest friction of any bearing type.

Double-row angular contact, 5000 series

Robust performance with a 30° contact angle

MRC double-row angular contact ball bearings are manufactured in two main types: C-type as Conrad construction and M-type as maximum capacity with filling notches. Each of the two rows has a 30° contact angle.

Single-row 15º angular contact, Type R and XLS

Handle heavy radial loads

MRC R-type bearings are single-row 15° angular contact ball bearings with one heavy race shoulder and one counterbored race shoulder on the outer ring.

Because of this construction it is possible to incorporate a greater number of balls than in the deep-groove non-filling notch bearing. R-type bearings have ample radial capacity and moderate thrust capacity in order to accommodate those applications involving heavy radial loads..

Single-row angular contact 7000, 7000P, and 7000PJ series

29° contact angle for heavy thrust loads

MRC 7000 Series bearings are single row 29° angular contact ball bearings with one heavy race shoulder and one counterbored race shoulder on the outer ring. Because of this construction it is possible to incorporate a greater number of balls than in the deep groove non-filling notch bearing.

MRC 7000 Series angular contact ball bearings should be used in applications in which the thrust load is heavy and beyond the capacity of single-row types. Example for a heavy thrust load in one direction or a heavy thrust load in one direction combined with a radial load.

PumPac 8000, 8000BB, and 8000AAB series

40° and 15° bearing contact angles for varying thrust loads

The PumPac 8000 Series consists of a matched set of 40° (A) and 15° (B) angular contact ball bearings with computer optimized internal design. They are manufactured to ABEC-3 tolerances and are supplied with an inner ring centered machined brass cage.

Also available is the 8000BB PumPac Diamond Series consisting of two 15° (B) bearings in a back-to-back (DB) arrangement; and the 8000AAB Series consisting of two 40° (A) bearings in tandem, matched back-toback (DB) with one 15° (B) bearing.

Single-row angular contact, split ring, 9000 series

Maximum thrust capacity with 29° and 40° contact angles

The MRC 9000 Series bearings are compact, two-directional max thrust capacity bearings. Available in five separate ranges to meet different operating conditions.

Precision ABEC 5 and ABEC 7 bearings

Built for high speed and extreme running accuracy

Precision ball bearings in tolerance grades ABEC-5 and ABEC-7 are recommended for applications where high speed and,or extreme running accuracy is required.

These bearings have the same nominal external dimensions as equivalent size ABEC-1 grade bearings but running characteristics and external dimensions are held to closer tolerances.

Specialty bearings

Solutions for a range of unique applications

In addition to our standard line of bearing products, MRC can also supply several non-standard or specialty bearings. Just a few examples include:

  • Adapter bearings
  • Conveyor bearings
  • Dynamometer bearings
  • Electric motor quality bearings
  • Felt seal replacement bearings
  • Mast guide bearings
  • Wide inner ring bearings

The most common cause of pump bearing failure is not fatigue.

Thrust bearings for centrifugal pumps rarely achieve the theoretical life specified by API and ANSI standards. This is because pump bearings usually fail from causes other than fatigue:

  • Impact
  • Static vibration
  • Contamination
  • Insufficient loading
  • Excessive thrust
  • Misalignment
  • Inadequate/ineffective lubrication

MRC offers the widest selection of ball bearings for pumps in the bearing industry. A solution exists for nearly every combination of loads and speeds.

Hybrid ceramic ball bearings

MRC Hybrid ceramic ball bearings use a combination of traditional 52100 steel rings precision matched with silicon nceramic balls. In addition to being excellent electric insulators, hybrid bearings have a higher speed capability and will provide longer service life than all-steel bearings in most applications.

Marathon series

Corrosion-resistant solutions for food and beverage applications

Maintenance-free Marathon® mounted bearing units incorporate cast or machined stainless steel housings, stainless insert bearings to enhance durability, corrosion resistance in challenging food, beverage industry applications. Stainless steel housings can withstand exposure to extremely aggressive washdown chemicals, even when present in strong concentrations.

In addition to Marathon composite units, our HDi-heavy-duty cast iron-and XDs-extreme-duty cast stainless steel have been introduced to more thoroughly meet the needs of the industry.

The HDi series combines corrosion resistance together with the strength of cast iron-without the problem of flaking nickel plating-and are priced competitively with nickel-plated versions. For extremely challenging applications, the XDs series provides top of the line corrosion resistance, the greatest housing strength available within the Marathon line.

SKF Super-precision bearings

Angular contact ball bearings

SKF manufactures super-precision angular contact ball bearings for shaft diameters from 6 to 360 mm. Application requirements vary and as a result the SKF assortment of super-precision angular contact ball bearings includes four ISO dimension series in numerous executions. The wide selection of designs and variants enables them to be incorporated into virtually every machine tool application as well as other applications where precision bearings are required.

Cylindrical roller bearings

SKF super-precision cylindrical roller bearings are characterized by:

  • High speed capability
  • High rigidity
  • High radial load carrying capacity
  • Low friction
  • Low cross-sectional height

These bearings are therefore particularly wellsuited for machine tool spindles where the bearing arrangement must accommodate heavy radial loads and high speeds, while providing a high degree of stiffness.

SKF super-precision single row cylindrical roller bearings have a higher speed capability than double row bearings while double row bearings are more suitable for heavier loads.

Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings

SKF double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings are designed to locate spindle shafts axially in both directions. These bearings are intended for mounting in combination with cylindrical roller bearings in the NN30K or N10K series in the same housing bore. This bearing combination simplifies machining of the housing bore.

Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings are manufactured with the same nominal bore size and outside diameter as corresponding cylindrical roller bearings. But the outside diameter tolerance of the housing washers, combined with the housing bore diameter and geometric tolerances recommended for super-precision cylindrical roller bearings under light to normal load and rotating inner ring load will result in an appropriate radial clearance in the housing bore. This clearance is sufficient to prevent radial loads from acting on the thrust bearing provided that its outer ring is not axially clamped in the housing.

Axial-radial cylindrical roller bearings

Super-precision axial-radial cylindrical roller bearings are commonly used to support rotary tables, indexing heads and multi-spindle heads on machining centres. SKF manufactures super-precision axial-radial cylindrical roller bearings for shaft diameters from 80 to 850 mm. Their internal design, together with close tolerance manufacturing processes enables these bearings to attain radial run-out better than and axial run-out close to, P4 tolerance class.

Angular contact thrust ball bearings for screw drives

Machine tools require screw drives that can position a work piece or machine component quickly and efficiently and precisely. To meet these requirements, screw drives can be supported at both ends by SKF super-precision angular contact thrust ball bearings. The bearings provide a high degree of axial stiffness and high axial load carrying capacity and accommodate high speeds and rapid accelerations and offer very high running accuracy.

Angular contact thrust ball bearings for screw drives are well suited for screw drive applications but are also beneficial in other applications where reliable radial, axial support is required together with extremely precise axial guidance of the shaft.

Precision lock nuts

Industrial lock nuts with lock washers aren't considered to be suitable for super-precision bearing applications because of the relatively wide manufacturing tolerances of the thread and abutment surfaces. As a result SKF has developed a full line of precision lock nuts that are manufactured within very tight tolerances. These simple to mount devices which locate bearings and other components accurately and efficiently on a shaft and meet the requirements of machine tool applications, Both technically and economically.

All SKF precision lock nuts use friction between the mating thread flanks of the spindle shaft and lock nut to hold them in place. To apply this friction SKF manufactures precision lock nuts in the following design:

  • precision lock nuts with locking pins

Gauges

Conventional measuring methods and instruments are not always suitable for checking tapered seats or measuring the inside or outside envelope diameter of the roller set of a cylindrical roller bearing in precision applications. However SKF has developed an assortment of gauges specially designed to take the accurate measurements necessary when mounting cylindrical roller bearings with a tapered bore. These gauges are also useful for other than precision applications.

Ring gauges in the GRA30 series and DMB taper gauges can be used to check the most common tapered seats. A GRA ring gauge can only be used to check a tapered seat for a particular bearing size. DMB taper gauges but can be used for a range of diameters as well as for tapers other than 1:12.

To precisely adjust the radial internal clearance or preload when mounting a cylindrical roller bearing with a tapered bore. It is necessary to accurately measure the inside or outside envelope diameter of the roller set(s). SKF internal clearance gauges in the GB30 and GB10 series and in the GB49 series enable simple and accurate measuring.

Slewing bearings

Slewing bearings comprise an inner ring and an outer ring, one of which usually incorporates a gear. Together with attachment holes in both rings, they enable an optimized power transmission with a simple and quick connection between adjacent machine components. The bearing raceways, in conjunction with the rolling elements and cages or spacers are designed to accommodate loads acting singly or in combination and in any direction.

SKF manufactures standard and customized slewing bearings in various designs with outside diameters from 0,1 to 18 m to meet the demands of particular applications:

  • Slewing bearing with four-point contact ball bearing
  • Slewing bearing with eight-point contact ball bearing
  • Slewing bearing with crossed cylindrical roller bearing

SKF Plain Bearings

Radial spherical plain bearings

Radial spherical plain bearings have an inner ring with a sphered convex outside diameter and an outer ring with a correspondingly sphered but concave inside surface. Their design makes them particularly suitable for bearing arrangements where alignment movements between shaft and housing have to be accommodated or where oscillating or recurrent tilting or slewing movements must be possible at relatively slow sliding speeds and often accompanied with heavy loads.

SKF supplies a wide assortment of radial spherical plain bearings with various sliding contact surface combinations.

Angular contact spherical plain bearings

Angular contact spherical plain bearings are spherical in shape and inclined at an angle to the bearing axis. This design makes them well suited for accommodating combined loads. Single angular contact spherical plain bearings can only accommodate axial loads acting in one direction and can be separated, enabling the rings to be mounted separately.

SKF manufactures maintenancefree single acting angular contact spherical plain bearings with a steel/PTFE FRP sliding contact surface combination in the GAC series as standard. Other design and series are available on request.

Thrust spherical plain bearings

Thrust spherical plain bearings have a convex spherical surface on the shaft washer and a corresponding concave spherical surface in the housing washer. These bearings are intended to accommodate axial loads primarily but can also accommodate combined loads. The radial load component of a combined load should not exceed 50% of the axial load component. When radial loads are larger thrust bearings should be combined with radial bearings in the GE dimension series.

Thrust spherical plain bearings can be separated, enabling shaft and housing washers to be mounted separately.

SKF manufactures maintenancefree thrust spherical plain bearings with a steel/PTFE FRP sliding contact surface combination in the GX series as standard.

Rod ends

Rod ends consist of an eye-shaped head with integral shank that forms a housing for a spherical plain bearing. They are used primarily on the ends of hydraulic or pneumatic pistons to join the cylinder to an associated component.

SKF supplies a wide assortment of standard rod ends with different thread and shank designs at the rod end housing making them easy to install. The various sliding contact surface combinations of the bearings make the rod ends suitable for the operating conditions of many applications.

Bushings are suitable for rotating, oscillating and linear movements, whereas straight cylindrical bushings can accommodate radial loads only and flanged bushings can accommodate radial and axial loads in one direction.

Each combination of bushing design and material has characteristic properties and makes a bushing particularly suitable for certain applications.

Thrust washers

SKF composite dry sliding thrust washers are designed for applications where axial space is limited. Maintenance is not possible and where lubricant starvation can occur.

As well as for composite bushings and strips, SKF manufactures composite thrust washers as standard from PTFE and POM composite materials.

Strips

SKF composite dry sliding strips are designed for applications where axial space is limited. Maintenance is not possible and where lubricant starvation can occur. Strips can be bent, pressed or coined to form flat linear guides. For example: L- or V-shaped profiles or other types of dry sliding components and fit the actual application.
